Engaging with Insider Mediators - Sustaining peace in an age of turbulence

April 27, 2020

This Guidance Note explores the relevance of insider mediation in 21st century practice-policy landscape, seeks to foster an understanding of the theoretical and practical underpinnings of the 'insider mediation' concept and provide practical knowledge and a step-by-step guide to engaging with insider mediators. Case studies are used throughout the Guidance Note to highlight how insider mediators work on a wide range of thematic issues, including peace processes, natural resource-related conflicts, electoral-related violence, building social cohesion and addressing religious and faith-related issues.

Gender Diversity and Inclusion for a Fair Business Environment
Business integrity goes well beyond anti-corruption compliance, and touches upon diversity, inclusion and gender equality. Phenomena like discrimination, gender pay gap, exclusion from business opportunities, bullying, and sexual and other types of harassment are all examples of integrity flaws that not only hamper the internal environment of a company, but also impact the lives of their employees and the communities in which they live. Recognizing and addressing these problems is key for companies that want to lead in both diversity and inclusion and business integrity, ultimately contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The report is the outcome of a research conducted across five of the ASEAN countries participating in the project: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam. It provides a snapshot of catalytic factors to foster gender equal leadership across three domains. Firstly, it explores how social norms shape gender roles and stereotypes that can limit women’s leadership prospects. Secondly, it identifies catalysts for an enabling environment, including laws and regulatory measures, and the role of coalitions and advocates. Finally, it highlights the role of companies and their organizational policies and practices in promoting gender equal leadership.   Explore key messages and summary of the report here. , full_html, The report is the outcome of a research conducted across five of the ASEAN countries participating in the project: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam. Measuring the Economic Impact of Violent Extremism Leading to Terrorism in Africa
This study provides primary research on the economic cost and impact of violent extremism by looking at the economic cost of violent extremism focusing on 18 African countries. It examines the impacts of attacks on infrastructure and physical damage, formal and informal economies as well as the impact of 'security spending' on development processes. The report estimates that 16 of the 18 focus countries have lost an average of US$97 billion per year in informal economic activity since 2007. Findings aim to equip key stakeholders and policy makers to make evidence-based decisions and choices to address violent extremism from a sustainable development or inclusive livelihood support perspective. , full_html, This study provides primary research on the economic cost and impact of violent extremism by looking at the economic cost of violent extremism focusing on 18 African countries.

Next Generation Women, Peace and Security
In 2018, the N-PEACE initiative launched the civil society small grants component to strengthen civil society action in some of the most remote and isolated peacebuilding contexts in the above countries. The pilot awarded small grants to 21 civil society organizations which resulted in approximately 8,474 direct beneficiaries.   This inaugural publication of Next Generation Women, Peace and Security: Case Studies on Women’s Inclusion chronicles how women and gender activists from N-Peace are using social innovation to respond to ongoing conflict and peacebuilding contexts, whilst rising to address emerging conflict concerns. Touching on all four key components of N-Peace, their work is fortifying gender equality from grassroots to international levels. , full_html, These case studies chronicle how women and gender activists from N-Peace are using social innovation to respond to ongoing conflict and peacebuilding contexts, whilst rising to address emerging conflict concerns. Gender Dimensions of the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights
The United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), which were unanimously endorsed by the Human Rights Council in June 2011, are the global authoritative standards to prevent, mitigate and remediate business-related adverse human rights impacts. It is widely documented that women and girls experience adverse impacts of business activities differently and often disproportionately. They also face additional barriers in seeking access to effective remedies. Moreover, because of intersecting and multiple forms of discrimination, different women and girls may be affected differently by business activities in view of their age, colour, caste, class, ethnicity, religion, language, literacy, access to economic resources, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, residence in a rural location, and migration, indigenous or minority status. It is, therefore, critical that measures taken by States and business enterprises to implement the UNGPs are gender responsive. The booklet is part of the collective efforts of the UN Working Group on the issue of human rights and transnational corporations and other business enterprises and UNDP to widely disseminate the gender guidance for UNGPs. It includes each principle of the UNGPs alongside the gender guidance and illustrative actions. It aims for better integration of a gender perspective in the business and human rights field by all relevant stakeholders. , full_html, This booklet includes each principle of the UNGPs alongside the gender guidance and illustrative actions.
